Riddle Oil Sample Pack: My First Impressions

I recently read this Buzzfeed article that talked about Riddle Oil and I instantly looked up the website to order some for myself! Isn’t it weird how you ‘um’ and ‘ah’ over some purchases for ages but others you need to have as soon as you hear about it!? Well this article did a great job of selling the perfume and I knew I had to try it out!

Riddle Oil is a company than sells fragrances and fragranced products made from essential oils. The oils are supposed to have a longer lasting scent than alcohol based scents and they are all cruelty-free and vegan!

Now, the scent that really caught my interest was the Riddle Oil Original. The company claims that it’s a ‘one of a kind fragrance that works with your body’s natural chemistry’ i.e. It’s supposed to change fragrance once it warms up on your skin and will smell differently on different people.

From the reviews I’ve read, this is legit and everyone talks about how amazing it smells – to the point where people on the street stop them to compliment their smell. I love a good stranger compliment so of course, I was sold! I’m also very interested in pheromone-based perfumes *digs out my Science BSc* and have wanted to try one out for a while now. When would be a better time than my honeymoon!?

The problem is, when I pulled up the website, I was a little overwhelmed with the choice available! I definitely wanted to try the “your skin but better” Original, but the others looked so good too! Anyone who knows me will tell you I’m the most indecisive person alive. No joke, Mr H sent me out to buy ice cream the other day and I spent 30 minutes standing in front of the freezer door in Rite Aid because I was too afraid of making the wrong decision!

The sample set seemed the obvious way to go but it doesn’t come cheap at $219.45. It’s actually on sale at $109 right now but that still sounded kind of painful especially when I wasn’t sure I would even like them!

I emailed Riddle to ask their opinion on how to choose a scent and within minutes I’d received a reply offering me a discounted code on the sample set so I could make a fully educated decision about which one I liked best! They sure do have some lovely people working over there at Riddle! I literally ordered my set straight away (it’s technically an early birthday present from Mr H but maybe he’ll forget come September..!).

Anyway, my delivery arrived today! On a gloomy, rainy day in New York, what better way is there to spend my afternoon than to smell all my new fragrances and write down my first impressions?! That way, when some other confused soul is trying to make a decision about their first Riddle Oil choice, they’ll have me to turn to.

It did make my day!

So here we go:

The oil bottles are sent in a little velvet drawstring pouch. Each sample set contains a half dram (1.8ml) each of:

  • Original
  • Santal
  • Sundara
  • Night Flower
  • North Wind
  • Eden
  • Muse
  • Poppy
  • Austin
  • Last Petal
  • Sphynx

Out of these, Riddle Original, Santal, Sundara, Sphinx and Austin are actually unisex and so, if you’re feeling generous, you can even share them with a lucky man-friend :).

Thinking about it now, this is a really good price as the full size bottles contain 8ml of oil and so, even paying full sale price of $109, you’re getting more oil for your money :)!

You also get some scent notes and tips on how to use them.

Original

SCENT PROFILE
Riddle Oil Original (our top seller) is a unique musk perfume oil made from amber resins and musky base notes. This scent is often described as, “your skin but better”. The scent is unique to the user and is a non-scent, scent. A delicate fresh and clean smell that mixes with your bodies chemistry and uses your body heat to warm the molecules and diffuse them into the air. This is truly a one of a kind scent that comes in fragrance oil form which makes it last much longer that typical alcohol based perfumes and colognes. A wonderful gift for those who have everything or simply want a unique gift. There is no other scent like our Riddle Original. It can be worn alone or layered with other scents. It will simply enhance your own personal scent and leave you feeling confident and fresh.

SCENT NOTES
AMBER RESIN AND MUSKY BASE NOTES.

My first thoughts:

Fresh and clean but musky. It’s got an elegance about it. I’m interested to see how this changes on my skin as this is the one everyone raves about online.

Santal

SCENT PROFILE
Santal is a very sexy, sensual and down right addictive scent that will linger around you for days. This scent is a walk through the forest that entices you with a sophisticated woodsy presence. This scent is spicy without being overwhelming, a true delight to every nose. Often this scent will recall fond memories that will enhance your mood. Rich yet delicate, made with SPICY CARDAMOM, AMBER, SANDALWOOD, ORCHID & CASSIS this signature scent is one that you will always want to have around.
SCENT NOTES
SPICY CARDAMOM, AMBER, SANDALWOOD, ORCHID & CASSIS

My first thoughts:

Much lighter than I expected but still quite spicy. I don’t normally like sandalwood but it’s not overpowering in this oil. It’s got a sweetness to it in the bottle. Reminds me of an Indian garden which is interesting as the website states ‘Often this scent will recall fond memories that will enhance your mood’. I would wear this as an ‘Indian summer’ scent or an autumn one. This one is supposed to be unisex and I think the spice would be really nice on a man.

Sundara

SCENT PROFILE
Sundara is luxury with a capital “L”. Fresh, rich and confident is this scents profile. This perfume is deep and meaningful, it possess a special blend of woody, green and citrus floral musk notes with bergamot and finishing with a light sandalwood touch. People will be drawn in by this scent and captivated by their desire for more. Sundara means beautiful and this scent is truly doing it’s name justice.

SCENT NOTES
TOP – GREEN TEA, LEMON, BERGAMONT / MIDDLE – BLACK TEA, JASMINE / BASE – HAY, TONKA BEAN, SANDALWOOD

My first thoughts:

Really fresh. Almost grassy? The citrus makes this one light and summery. I would wear this to a summer lunch in the sun. Another unisex one that would work as a nice fresh scent on a guy.

Night Flower

SCENT  PROFILE
“IF YOU’RE GOING TO SAN FRANCISCO BE SURE TO WEAR SOME FLOWERS IN YOUR HAIR.”
Night Flower is a walk in the secret garden of treasured memory. Although this scent is made from delicate floral notes it is loved by all including those non-floral wearers. It has a way of being much more than a scent, it is a loving embrace holding together an innocence that we can all relate to. Made from white peony, jasmine, tuberose, tamarind, arum lily and finished off with the airiness of incense then grounded with amber and sandalwood this scent will make you feel peaceful and loved, resting gently on your skin blooming into a light bouquet.

SCENT  NOTES
TOP – WHITE PEONY, JASMINE / MIDDLE – TUBEROSE, TAMARIND, ARUM LILY / BASE – INCENSE, SANDALWOOD, AMBER

My first thoughts:

Floral and Sweet. It’s a stronger smell but the sandalwood doesn’t overpower. I’m not much of a floral person but they’re right – I still like it! I would probably wear it to something formal like a wedding/reception.

North Wind

SCENT PROFILE
North Wind will bring you to a beach in Saint Bart’s with a cocktail in your hand and the sea breeze and sun kisses to your skin. This mental tropical getaway is as sweet as the fruit it’s made with. The fresh peach, pineapple, papaya, coconut milk, lilies and wild freesia will take you away and make everyday a vacation.

SCENT NOTES
FRESH PEACH, PINEAPPLE, PAPYA, COCONUT MILK, LILIES AND WILD FREESIA.

My first thoughts:

I was most excited to smell this one after the original. I love the smell of it! It’s tropical, fruity and sweet. I literally want to add a shot of rum and stick a tiny umbrella in it! It reminds me of my old Escada perfume I used to wear. I’m definitely going to be rocking this scent when we move on to Hawaii in a couple of weeks!

Eden

SCENT PROFILE
Eden captures the fresh cut green scent of the Gardenia blossoms. This sweet, fresh and floral oil makes you smell clean and feel innocent.

SCENT NOTES
Grass, Fern, Lemon, Gardenia, Red Jasmine, Musk and Clove

My first thoughts:

A slightly heavier scent than the Sundara but still really fresh and foresty . It smells a bit more ‘adulty’ and mature which is interesting as the website states the opposite! Like I would wear this to a fancy evening dinner in the summer. This smell reminds me of India – maybe the clove?

Muse

SCENT  NOTES
BERGAMOT, BAY, IVY, MARINE, PEONY, MAGNOLIA, HONEYSUCKLE, SANDALWOOD, AGARWOOD, AMBER, MUSK, PEACH & COCONUT

My first thoughts:

I really like this one! It’s sweet but fresh. Fruity but more subtle than North Wind. I could wear this back in the UK as my every day scent. Reminds me of DKNY apples.

Poppy

SCENT  NOTES
MELON, LEMON, LILY, CYCLAMEN, POPPY, FREESIA, VIOLET, JASMINE, ROSE, YLANG YLANG, ORANGE BLOSSOM, MUSK

My first thoughts:

A grown up fresh and subtly ‘melon-y’! But not like a Jolly Rancher melon, more like a fresh ‘oh there might be a melon hidden in my flower bouquet’ melon-y. I like it. It’s a nice, fresh, day to day scent.

Austin

SCENT NOTES
SPICY CARDAMOM, AMBER, SANDALWOOD, ORCHID, MANGO BLOSSOM, STRAWBERRIES, VANILLA, FIG, COCONUT MILK, GREEN MOSS, CEDAR WOOD

My first thoughts:

Very spicy and grassy. I’m not a big spicy scent person so this is probably my least favourite. I think it’s a scent that I’d grow into when I get older!? This is more of a male scent to me and is included in the men’s sample pack.  I think my nose palate has some maturing to do!

Last Petal

SCENT NOTES
ROSE, JASMINE, HIBISCUS, AMBRETTE, MUSK, AMBER, VANILLA

My first thoughts:

Another very strong scent. It’s very musky but also very sweet from the vanilla and you also get a strong floral note. Another one that I would have to grow into It reminds me of pot-pourri .

Sphynx

HIGH QUALITY EGYPTIAN MUSK

My first thoughts:

I expected this to be overpowering but I could barely smell it at first! Again, it’s a unisex scent and I really think it’s equally nice for men and women. Weirdly, it also reminds me of that addictive newborn baby smell?! Like, I keep reopening the bottle to smell it!

Surprisingly, I liked almost all of these fragrances!

This was really unexpected as I normally tend to dislike a lot of the notes described on the website. I’m so glad I went for the sample set now as otherwise I would never have given some of these oils a chance!

Interestingly enough, when I went back to each bottle for a second sniff, they seemed to have changed – smelling stronger/lighter/spicier etc! It just goes to show how complex your sense of smell is!

I guess now I have to see how I actually like them on my skin! Over the next couple of weeks, I’ll be trying out one fragrance each day and keeping notes on my second impressions of each scent.

Hopefully I’ll have some interesting thoughts to relay back to you in ‘Part 2’ of my Riddle Oil journey!
